Historic South End is located 1.5 miles from center city Charlotte and borders the historic Dilworth neighborhood. South End has its beginning in the 1850s when the first railroad line came to Charlotte, connecting the Queen City to Columbia and Charleston, SC. Over the decades, the thriving manufacturing community of South End sprang up along the tracks, centered on the burgeoning textile industry. The area experienced a revival in the 1990s as restaurants, shops, and design-related industries discovered the beauty and versatility of the old mills and warehouses. Many warehouses have also been converted into upscale condominiums. The addition of Charlotte’s light rail system has spouted new development along the tracks, providing easy access to nearby Uptown Charlotte. South End has become a very popular spot for shops, restaurants and urban living.
Don’t miss: A trip to the South End Trolley Museum and a ride on Charlotte’s oldest surviving, fully restored streetcar, car #85. Camden Yards features the Design Center and Pike’s Old Fashioned Soda Shop. Price’s Chicken Coop has some of the best fried chicken in Charlotte with lines out the door at lunchtime. Mac’s Speedshop on South Blvd. has the best pulled pork BBQ in Charlotte, and draws a huge crowd all day long. Nikkos is a hot Southend destination for Sushi, located in SouthEnd’s “pink building”
