Lidl Joins Grocer Wars in the Carolinas
The grocer wars continue nationwide and in the Charlotte market as well. The newest face to the US is German grocer, Lidl, who will be opening its first stores in the Charlotte market next month — one at 9990 Charlotte Highway in Indian Land and the other at 1005 E. Dixon Boulevard in Shelby — both opening Sept. 21.
Then, 951 E. Hudson Boulevard in Gastonia and the Riverwalk development in Rock Hill, at 1260 Herrons Ferry Road — both opening Sept. 28.
Several other options have been of interest to Lidl in our market but, the company has declined to confirm locations or dates for possible openings.
Commercial firms have hinted that Lidl has been looking into some great options in Charlotte, including in South End, Orchard Lake Drive, the University area and Monroe Road in Charlotte, as well as other sites in Concord and Mooresville.
Lidl set an initial goal of opening 20 stores in the Carolinas and Virginia this summer but, at this date has exceeded that number. 100 stores are expected to open in the upcoming months on the East Coast.
Some of the impressive features in Lidl store models of 20,000 square feet of customer/sales space include:
- Floor-to-ceiling windows that will let the sunshine in
- Wood floors
- Brick floors
- Polished concrete floors
- Six wide aisles to shop.
- An in-house bakery
- 120 wine options, broken down into easy-to-navigate categories.
Lidl will offer five “deals” each Monday and Thursday on meat and produce as well as a number of other in-store promotions that will alternate weekly. Approximately 90% of the groceries available at Lidl will be exclusive brand products.
Other items offered will include fitness gear, kitchen appliances, toys and outdoor furniture.
Store hours will be from 8AM to 9PM daily.
Stay tuned for more store locations and openings!
