Dilworth Charlotte NC – What’s NOT to Love About Dilworth?
A Little Lesson in Inner-City History
In years past, there was serious doubt if several of Charlotte’s inner-city communities could be ‘saved’ from the aging that commonly exists with historic communities throughout the country. Residents used to move to the inner-city communities as young adults, then lived and died there, having done very little to improve the community–being completely satisfied with the ‘status quo.’
My, how times have changed since 1891, the year our coveted Dilworth community was developed! As Charlotte’s very first streetcar neighborhood, Dilworth was THE place to reside–to be in the suburbs, away from the center city frenzy. Imagine the peace and quiet that existed in the Dilworth suburbs!
The 1960’s brought doom and gloom to this once vital community and near the end of the decade, the Dilworth Community Development Association (DCAD) was formed to combat the status quo. Residents united and rallied to revive the Dilwoth neighborhood. Dilworth has been drawing new residents in droves–those who have a passion for not only maintaining the vital, walkable inner city community that Dilworth has become but, those with a passion to ‘grow’ this neighborhood into one like no other.
The community is filled with architectural variety–from small ranch homes to unique bungalows to corner lot mansions and even newly popular Dilworth condominium complexes. The one common thread in Dilworth is the undying dedication and enthusiasm of its residents to keep this wonderfully popular community alive and unique. Historic preservation is prevalent in the Dilworth community and the residents will all tell you what a wonderful ‘community’ Dilworth is to live, many moving from one home in Dilworth to another, also within Dilworth.
With top-ranked schools, sidewalks leading to fabulous restaurants and unique shops and the close proximity to Charlotte’s Center City, Dilworth truly has it all. There is no more ‘status quo’ in this inner city community; in fact, Dilworth residents are constantly at work to keep their small sector of the city as inviting and welcoming as one could possibly desire!
