Discover Charlotte | Uptown Wards
Originally political divisions of the city, Uptown Charlotte’s four Wards are now used to indicate the quadrants from a location and use standpoint. The central axis that determines the boundaries of each of the four Wards, is located at the intersection of Trade and Tryon Streets. Few newcomers to the area consider the maze of skyscrapers at Charlotte’s Center City to be identifiable as part of the Wards. Each Ward has its own distinct personality and land use as follows:
- First Ward — Heavily residential but, also commercially the home to both the Trolley and Bobcats Arena. Charlotte’s First Ward was almost entirely home to public housing for several decades but, with vertical residential development in the 1990‘s and 2000‘s, it has enjoyed great success as a mixed-use, mixed-income community. Now a community that rests against a backdrop of skyscrapers, First Ward’s steetscape is clean and full of vibrancy.
- Second Ward — The city’s government center with few residential complexes including some of the most upscale in the city. The Ratcliffe (which enjoys an indoor walkway through both first and second Wards), The Trust, The Madison and the new Skye Condominiums. Shopping and dining can also be found in Charlotte’s Second Ward.
- Third Ward — Today, you would never imagine that much of Third Ward was lost to the decline of industry in Center City years ago. Home to Bank of America Stadium (Go Panthers!), the new Third Ward Park and Johnson and Wales University. Gateway Village is a major residential and commercial complex that is central to Third Ward as well. A proposed baseball stadium has also provided proof that this will likely be a major center of growth in coming years for Charlotte’s Uptown.
- Fourth Ward — Ahh…Fourth Ward! Home to Charlotte’s only remaining Queen Anne architecture. Fourth Ward’s tree-lined streets, brick sidewalks and Fourth Ward Park offer residents and visitors alike, some of the city’s best walking spots. Fourth Ward Park, at the center of the neighborhood, is surrounded by several major condo complexes and is the most densely residential among Charlotte’s Uptown Wards.
