With a population of more than 17,800, Cornelius began as a textile mill village over a century ago but, the town’s focus shifted west with the development of Lake Norman, which was created in 1963 when Duke Power dammed the Catawba River. Originally incorporated as “Liverpool” in 1903, the name was changed in honor of the town’s principal investor, J.B. Cornelius, in 1905. Due to the damming of the Catawba River and the development of I-77, there are now magnificent lakefront homes in Cornelius, new retail shopping centers and fine dining, country clubs and golf courses galore in Cornelius.
