The Steele Creek area, approximately 18.5 square miles, commonly attracts those who want to live near a lake but, with a much closer commute (from Lake Wylie) to Uptown than the commute from Lake Norman.
The Steele Creek community derives its name from the small creek bearing the same name. “Steele” was the Scotch-Irish family name of immigrants who settled in the area in the 17th & 18th Centuries. The region was eventually named Steele Creek Township which was one of the original 15 Townships of Mecklenburg County.
There are wonderful lake amenities throughout Steele Creek as well as in the town of Belmont (Gaston County) and the SC communities of Tega Cay and Lake Wylie. Charlotte area communities including the Palisades, River Hills and Baxter, a neighborhood in Fort Mill, SC, are also nearby. The new Riverwalk development also sits on the banks of Lake Wylie between Fort Mill (SC) and Rock Hill (SC).
