Charlotte’s Inner City Communities – Historic Dilworth, Stronger than Ever
In years past, there was serious doubt if several of our inner city communities could be ‘saved’ from the aging that comes with most historic communities throughout the country. Residents used to move to these communities as young adults, then lived and died there, having done very little to improve the community–being satisfied with the ‘status quo.’
Times have changed since 1891 when our coveted Dilworth community was first developed! Being Charlotte’s very first streetcar neighborhood, Dilworth was THE place to reside–to be in the suburbs and away from the center city frenzy. Imagine that!
The 1960’s brought doom and gloom to this once vital community and near the end of the decade, the Dilworth Community Development Association was formed to combat the status quo. Residents rallied to revive the neighborhood and have been drawing new residents in who have a passion for maintaining the vital, walkable inner city community that Dilworth has become.
The community is filled with variety–from small ranch homes to unique bungalows to corner lot mansions. The one common thread in Dilworth is the undying dedication and enthusiasm of its residents to keep this wonderfully popular community alive and unique. Historic preservation is also prevalent in the Dilworth community and the residents will all tell you what a wonderful ‘community’ Dilworth is to live.
With wonderful residents, lovely homes, superb schools, sidewalks leading to fabulous restaurants and unique shops and the close proximity to Charlotte’s Center City, Dilworth truly has it all. There is no more ‘status quo’ in this inner city community; in fact, Dilworth residents are constantly at work to keep their small sector of the city as inviting and welcoming as one could possibly desire!
