365 Things to Do in Charlotte – Mert’s Heart and Soul

Charlotte, NC:  Dining | Uptown | Southern, New Southern

Located in the heart of Uptown Charlotte, Mert’s Heart and Soul is one of my favorite restaurants in the Queen City.  It is also one of the most sought after dining destinations in all of Charlotte.  Mert’s offers their award-winning macaroni and cheese, sweet, buttery cornbread, shrimp and grits, mouth-watering southern fried chicken and even delectable black-eyed pea patties.

Mert’s has been featured on Diners & Dives & Around Carolina.

Mert’s southern, low country and Gullah-inspired favorites leave their guests with a one-of-a-kind “home cooked” experience.  Stop by Mert’s today to discover for yourself that Mert’s IS the heart and soul of Charlotte!  You’ll be glad you did.

365 Things to Do & Places to Go | Charlotte Knights – BB&T Ballpark

BB&T Ballpark
BB&T Ballpark

In 1987, George Shinn, also the founder of the NBA Charlotte Hornets, bought the minor league team from the Crockett family. Shinn committed to building a permanent home for the team and in 1988, the team, formerly known as the Charlotte Orioles(a 2-A Affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles) was re-named the Charlotte Knights.

Crocket Park, with a ‘make-shift’ stadium was soon outgrown and as Shinn affiliated with the Chicago Cubs, a new stadium was in the works. Fort Mill, SC became home to the Charlotte Knights in 1989 with a brand new 8,000-seat stadium, named Knights Stadium.

Before the 1997 season, Shinn sold the Knights to North Carolina businessman Don Beaver, who then affiliated with 3-A Affiliate, Chicago White Sox.

In 2011, a land-swap deal was made by the Charlotte City Council & The Mecklenburg County Commission that brought about the construction of a brand new, $54M stadium, right in the heart of Uptown Charlotte. The first game was held in the new BB&T Ballpark April 11, 2014. The new 10,200 seating capacity stadium includes 945 club seats and 22 luxury suites. The skyline views from the ballpark are INCREDIBLE and, the BB&T Ballpark is the most visited venue in Minor League Baseball!

BB&T BallPark

If you haven’t been to the ballpark, you’re in for a real treat! The Knights will open their sixth season at BB&T Ballpark against the Durham Bulls (3-A Affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays) on Thursday, April 4th at 7:04PM

365 Things to Do & Places to Go |Civetta – Now Open in Stonecrest

02/18/2019 by Debe Leave a Comment

365 Things to Do & Places to Go |Civetta Now Open in Stonecrest (South Charlotte)

Vivace’s Raleigh-based Urban Food Group has just opened a new South Charlotte Italian restaurant. The restaurant, Civetta (Italian slang for flirty little girl) opened in Stonecrest.

Fine Italian Dining in Stonecrest (South Charlotte)

The space was formerly Smoke Modern Barbecue. Lunch and dinner are served and the menu (so far) sounds divine! Chef Mike Cruz has one inviting menu – we think this one is going to be a big South Charlotte restaurant hit!

Pastas, dough and sauces such a Bolognese are prepared in-house. Civetta’s twist on old-school Italian fare include:

Civetta Restaurant (Stonecrest, Charlotte, NC)
  • Chicken or Eggplant Parmesan
  • Bucatini with meatballs
  • Baked pasta of the day (ziti, lasagna, etc.)
  • Stone-fired pizzas
  • Lobster risotto
  • Puttanesca Alla Civetta (penne à la vodka)
  • Penna Alla Civetta
  • Beef tenderloin filet
  • Veal chop served with polenta fries and sautéed spinach

Of course you can’t forget the desserts which include Italian classics such as tiramisu, gelato and cappuccino creme brûlée.

The old BBQ space in Stonecrest has been revamped, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. You’ll love the Italian-style exposed brick walls, dark wood floors with hand-painted black & white tiles and red banquette seating.

General Manager Kyle Hugger says, “Diners should expect thoughtful service and food that reminds them of their grandma’s kitchen.”

Civetta Italian Fare in Stonecrest, Charlotte NC

The wine wall truly makes a statement! With 600 bottles — including 156 different labels from domestic California wines to Italian specialties, the only difficulty will be your selection. Wines are served by the bottle or by the glass. As well, being in the heart of craft brewery country, Civetta features 12 taps, dedicated to local beers as well as NoDa’s new seltzer line, Brizo. Of course, there is a broad selection of bottled options as well as Italian beer. Cocktail options are also available to restaurant goers.

Urban Food Group’s third venture in Charlotte, Bar Marcel, is also slated to open in SouthPark in the upcoming months. Finishing touches are being put on that space and Ai3 has been commissioned to design both spaces.

365 Things to Do and Places to Go in Charlotte – Village Tavern

02/15/2019 by Debe Leave a Comment

365 Things to Do & Places to go in Charlotte – Village Tavern

Located in the Rotunda building in the heart of Charlotte (SouthPark), Village Tavern

Their mission: “To serve the best possible food, at affordable prices, using only the finest, freshest ingredients and to enrich the lives of each other, our guests, and our community. In other words to make a positive difference.”

What we love about Village Tavern – it’s not stuffy yet, not too casual either; the décor is quietly eloquent but, not too elegant either. Tables and booths surround the bar area with massive windows on all 3 seating sides of the restaurant – with great views. They also have a huge outdoor patio that is excellent on moderate days and is consistently ranked as one of best dining patios in Charlotte.

Village Tavern, SouthPark

The ambience and the low noise level is something that we also love about the restaurant. Being a tavern & restaurant in one, with a massive bar area, we never expected the noise level to allow for private conversations but, we were pleasantly surprised.

Head Chef Mary Grace Viado boasts an extensive and impressive resumé with a multitude of honors as well as honing her skills in numerous 5-star restaurants in both NYC and CA. The steak au poivre (their signature dish), bacon-wrapped scallops, southern shrimp and grits, crab cakes and their specialty salads are big hits with the customers. Renowned for its scratch kitchen, the craft bar also draws quite a crowd. Village Tavern features an impressive wine list, offering more than 50 wines by the glass, craft cocktails that are to-die-for, as well as local craft beers.

Really, everything on their menu is excellent! There are many choices, so just about anyone will find something that they like. Prices are reasonable and their bar and wine menu are quite extensive. You can bring your own bottle of wine and their cork fee is minimal.

Over their 30 years in business, we’ve dined there for brunch, business lunches, dinners and private parties and have always had a wonderful experience. The wait staff are always personable and professionally on-point as well.

Parking is scarce in front of the restaurant but, there are plenty of adjacent lots in and around the Rotunda building in which to park.  They could step up their handicapped accessible spots though – or police those using the few handicapped spots they do have.

365 Things to Do & Places to Go in the Charlotte Metro Area – Fran’s Filling Station

365 Things to Do & Places to Go in the Charlotte Metro Area – Fran’s Filling Station

Fran Scibelli, the owner of Fran’s Filling Station, has been active in Charlotte’s culinary scene since 1994. Her first restaurant, the Metropolitan Café, is a big hit in the Uptown area. Her second venture, Charlotte’s first artisan bakery, the Metropolitan Bakery was closed as Fran set her focus on a full-scale restaurant, providing eclectic dishes designed to satisfy both ‘grazers’ and hearty diners.

Fran, a former Washington, DC criminal defense attorney, has a passion for food and hospitality. Her farm-to-table concept, eclectic dishes, prepared from scratch and her impeccable hospitality, served up by the entire staff, has become a mainstay in the Dilworth community.

Fran’s Filling Station – A Dilworth Treasure

The dining room is private and simply elegant – or you can enjoy the fun & casual Tap Room. Fran’s Filling Station also has a front patio that is often filled with locals and their fur babies! Fran even hosts an annual End-of-Summer Community BBQ where the four-legged family members are served right off of the outdoor/patio grill!

A few of Fran’s Filling Station’s fabulous entrees include:

  • SPAGHETTI CACIO E PEPE
  • STUFFED CHICKEN BREAST
  • CITRUS & SOY GLAZED SCOTTISH SALMON
  • PAN-ROASTED PORK CHOP
  • PENNE AL FORNO
  • NY STRIP STEAK
  • FRAN’S MEATBALLS
  • MARYLAND-STYLE CRAB CAKES
  • HONEY PECAN-CRUSTED CHICKEN BREAST
  • METROPOLITAN MEATLOAF

We think you’re going to love this Dilworth treasure – this is one of our ‘must-visit’ restaurants.
