Restaurant Review – Nana’s Soul Food Kitchen

Restaurant Review – Nana’s Soul Food Kitchen

5 star restaurant review Charlotte NCDear friends arrived in Charlotte this evening and after checking into their hotel near the west side of Charlotte, my husband and I suggested meeting at Nana’s Soul Food Kitchen. The restaurant is known for their delicious fired catfish and chicken and their collard greens but, we’ve never heard a negative thing about the place or any of the dishes served. The four of us had a variety of dishes and no one had one single complaint – in fact, it’s some of the best food you’ll eat!

The ambiance was much like a cafeteria/diner – very casual and the perfect place to dine after a long flight – no fuss, no muss! There are no fancy plates or even ‘real’ silverware but, boy, the food is out of this world! The only negative about Nana’s was the dilemma you’ll have, trying to decide which dishes you want to try.  The prices are very reasonable – the four of us dined for just over $50. Where else can you get a home-style meal for so little? The service was good and the restaurant was clean and well-staffed.

We give this wonderful establishment a 5-star rating and are looking forward to our next dining experience at Nana’s Soul Food Kitchen.

Hurricane Preparedness – Is Florence Going to Show Her Face in Charlotte? Another Hugo Perhaps?

09/11/2018 by Debe Leave a Comment

Is Florence Going to Show Her Face in Charlotte? Another Hugo Perhaps?

HURRICANE PREPAREDNESSSeptember 22, 1989 – Hurricane Hugo, the storm by which all other storms are measured here in Charlotte. Being 150 miles inland, we never thought it possible to be faced with the level of destruction we experienced, nor the costs of $9-Billion to clean-up and repair/replace.

During the disaster, Charlotte reported sustained winds of 69 mph and gusts up to 99 mph, causing tremendous destruction to a region that virtually never sees such impacts from a tropical system, especially a hurricane. Some were without power for more than 3 weeks so, being prepared is key for us all today.

Forecasters say that Florence is vastly different than Hugo – both in the pace in which the storm will pass over and the speed of the winds. However, we do have to worry about the massive amount of rain expected – not only with regards to flooding but, downing trees. The trees that are the most vulnerable are the century-old trees that have massive above-ground weight.

Here are a few things to do today and to prepare for this upcoming storm.

Things to do TODAY:

1. Take inventory photos of your home – inside and out – each room, front and back of the house.
2. Review your insurance policies.
3. Park cars in the garage, if possible. If the power goes out, you can open your garage door manually.
4. HURRICANE PREPAREDNESSStock up on 1 gallon of water per person to use/drink each day.
5. Stock up on propane or charcoal for the grill.
6. Check your candle, lantern, torch and flashlight inventory. Do you have enough batteries for those flashlights?
7. Clear porches, backyard and carports of any projectiles – this would include any signs in your yard (such as for sale signs).
8. How is your weather stripping? Are your doors & windows adequately sealed?
9. Check for any loose shingles on your roof. If you are unable to access your roof with a pair of binoculars, have the professionals check it out.
10. Be sure to have plenty of the following on-hand:

1. Pet food
2. Non-perishable items for food such as high-protein bars
3. Any special medical equipment/supplies
4. Fill the bath tub with water; place pitchers or jugs of water in the freezer NOW.

11. Pack your valuables in a plastic container that has a lid to avoid any water damage. Most irreplaceable items are things that people forget to pack – pictures/photos, wedding albums, etc.
12. Assemble a first aid kit.
13. Have a can opener handy.
14. Do you have a battery powered radio? A solar-power phone charger?

During our meeting this morning, I asked everyone to share their ‘best tip’ for hurricane preparedness:

Hurricane FlorenceDebe: Be sure you have your chain saws readily available and filled with gas. We had 80,000 downed trees during Hugo and all we heard for weeks was the buzz of chain saws. Having one handy to use in order to get out of your driveway or to help others get out of their homes can be life-saving.

Scott: Everyone prepare for yourselves and your children but, don’t forget about your pets. That would include their medicines, food, leash, water and make sure the pet carrier is readily available should you need to leave your home. Keep bleach on hand – 4 drops of bleach per liter of water, let sit for ½ hour before drinking.

Elizabeth: Have old-school board games available for time without electricity. And, from the ‘lake girl,’ she recommends getting your boat out of the water and filling the tank with gas to add weight in the event we suffer the high winds that are being predicted.

Ray: Make certain your generator is properly grounded and filled with gas. DO NOT BRING GENERATORS OR YOUR PROPANE TANKS INDOORS and do not overload the power cords to run your appliances – this can cause a fire.

Christina: ALWAYS have your shoes on and have a Rubbermaid container packed and ready to go, if you need to evacuate. Pack your valuables in Rubbermaid containers and put in car. Put anything of value in the dishwasher & washing machine.

Stay safe and remember, preparedness is key in the face of any storm!

Red, White & Panther Blue – Giving with Heart

Red, White & Panther Blue – Giving with Heart

Imagine a school with colors of red & white becoming a sea of Panther Blue during the first pep rally of the year! Well, that’s exactly what happened when Thomasboro Academy was paid a visit by Sir Pur and the Carolina Panthers’ new owner, David Tepper.

“Just like our football players need equipment, you guys need equipment,” said Tepper. “We want to support you. So we brought backpacks filled with classroom supplies for all of you.”

The donation is part of a larger campaign organized by Tepper’s foundation and Classroom Central. In all, the campaign will donate 12,000 backpacks to more than 17 area schools.

Following the pep rally, Tepper visited classrooms to distribute the backpacks. They were filled with crayons, notebooks, paper, pencils, pencil sharpeners and other school supplies.

Equipping the students with backpacks and supplies takes quite a burden off parents and teachers and with Thomasboro students’ 100% being reduced/free lunches, the need is substantial. Thanks to The David Tepper Charitable Foundation, John M. Belk Endowment, Classroom Central and a number of the players’ own foundations, the Thomasboro students and over 11,000 other students across the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School district will be starting off the year, equipped for success.

Thank you, David Tepper, for bringing your passion for giving to Charlotte. We appreciate you more than you know!

Charlotte Airport Overlook: One of the Nation’s Best Airport Views

Charlotte Airport Overlook: One of the Nation’s Best Airport Views

The Charlotte Douglas International Airport Overlook is everything you could want in an airport overlook…and then some! Most longtime Charlotteans know about this spot but, it’s a surprise to newcomers to our area. Most airports won’t encourage actively watching planes and flight patterns and very few actually have an area do it.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport Overlook

Yes, one of the nations best overlook areas can be found right here in Charlotte. The view from this area is totally unobstructed – you feel like you could reach up and touch the belly of the planes as they land or ascend to their destination cities.

The area is just off of Old Dowd Road, located at 4355 Airport Overlook Drive, where visitors can enjoy a picnic on the grassy area or a selection of benches. As we all know though, it’s the view that brings people here! Where else can you have a front-row seat to watch airplanes take off and land on the Charlotte Douglas runways? It is rare for an airport to offer public viewing areas and Charlotte’s overlook is a popular one for people of all ages, photographers and, of course, plane enthusiasts.

While visiting one of the families who I sold a home to a few months ago, the children couldn’t contain their excitement of the ‘show’ they saw at the overlook the night before! It’s a very popular place to take the children…and it’s free! Well, unless you partake in something delicious, served by one of Charlotte’s food trucks – the airport’s newest addition to the overlook area.

Overlook Food Trucks

Looking for something ‘cheap’ or free to do in Charlotte, check out the Charlotte Douglas International Airport Overlook. Want a snack while you’re there? Here is the upcoming food truck schedule for the overlook area.

Directions

Click the map below to find your way to the overlook area. It’s easily accessible and traffic is not bad in the area on this side of the airport.

Charlotte Area Farmers Markets – Savoring Local Produce, Supporting Local Farmers

Charlotte Area Farmers Markets – Savoring Local Produce, Supporting Local Farmers

Charlotte Area Farmers Markets are a big hit this time of year and we are so thankful for a great climate that allows our local farmers to build fruitful businesses (okay, maybe a little pun there)! Charlotteans simply can’t get over the beautiful weather (including the delayed summer heat and all of the glorious rain), the blooms, and the Carolina blue skies this year. Because of the wonderful weather, lots of area farmers markets continue to yield delightful summer produce. The local vegetables have been ever-so fresh and the South Carolina peaches have been divine this year as well!

Farmers Markets in Charlotte NC

What better way is there to celebrate summer, than to grab some farm-fresh, LOCAL fruits, veggies and flowers? Here is a list of some great markets in all our favorite parts of town.

After my Closing on Friday, I stopped at the Kings Drive Farmers Market to grab a fresh cantaloupe, organic eggs, squash, broccolini, peaches, watermelon and some fresh scallops from my favorite fisherman vendor at the markets! He didn’t have scallops when my husband & I were by there on Tuesday so, we were happy to see them on Friday.

Don’t you just love a good farmers market?
